Former Kaduna State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) leader, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has urged Northern governors to adopt technology and advance digitalisation in the region.

He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to leverage technology in preparation for the 2027 elections.

El-Rufai made the remarks at the premiere of Fasahar Zamani, a 12-episode Hausa-language digital technology series with English subtitles, produced by Blue Sapphire Hub and funded by UK Development International. The series aims to promote awareness and adoption of technology across Northern Nigeria.

He noted that Northern Nigeria is lagging in technological adoption and encouraged state governments to support digital entrepreneurs with training and seed funding.

“Northern Nigeria is yet to come to terms with the reality of the tech age. State governments should identify digital and tech entrepreneurs in their states and support them to develop ideas, create jobs, and position Nigeria on the technology map,” El-Rufai stated.

Idongesit Udoh, Country Lead of the UK Global Digital Access Programme, highlighted that the project aims to include underserved communities, such as women and persons with disabilities, in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

Maryam Lawan, founder of Blue Sapphire Hub, explained that the series showcases practical applications of technology, from agriculture to healthcare, and encourages Northern communities to leverage digital skills for learning and economic development.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
