ADEKUNLE GOLD CALLS OUT BANK FOR USING HIS ‘FIRST-CLASS GIVEAWAY’ WITHOUT PERMISSION
Popular Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold, also known as AG Baby, has threatened legal action against Wema Bank after the bank allegedly used his ‘first-class giveaway’ concept in a promotional campaign without his consent.
The singer had launched the viral first-class giveaway to reward Nigerian graduates with top academic honors, offering them cash prizes as recognition for their achievement. The thoughtful gesture quickly gained attention and praise across social media.
However, the bank appeared to jump on the trend for their own marketing campaign. A promo message from ALAT, Wema Bank’s digital platform, read:
“AG Baby no send you first class gift? No worries, ALAT’s got you covered. Enjoy up to 70% off your favorite brands this weekend via eVouchers on the ALAT app – it’s no crime to not have a first-class degree.”
The ad didn’t sit well with Adekunle Gold, who took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his displeasure and hinted at legal action.
“Dear @wemabank @alat_ng, when did this start? You’ll be hearing from my people,” he wrote.
The post immediately stirred reactions online, with many fans backing AG Baby and calling out the bank for using his intellectual property without permission.
So far, Wema Bank has not issued a public response, but the singer’s warning suggests the matter could escalate if not resolved.
This incident reignites the conversation around creative rights and how public figures should be properly credited and compensated when brands use their ideas.
