ACCORD PARTY BACKS ALEX OTTI FOR SECOND TERM, RULES OUT 2027 GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE IN ABIA

In a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, the Accord Party has announced that it will not field a governorship candidate in Abia State.

Instead, the party says it will fully support the re-election of Governor Alex Otti.

The decision was made public during a visit by the party’s national leadership to Otti’s country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area, where party officials openly praised the governor’s performance in office.

Leading the delegation, Accord Party National Chairman, Christopher Imumolen, explained that the endorsement was based on what the party described as visible progress and effective governance in Abia State.

According to him, opposition politics should not be driven solely by criticism or rivalry.

Instead, he argued that political parties should also recognise and support leadership that appears to be delivering results.

That statement reflects a broader conversation in Nigerian politics, whether opposition parties should always compete against incumbents, or occasionally prioritise continuity when governance is seen as effective.

The party’s National Secretary, Mukhtar Abdullah Djungo, reinforced the position, making it clear that no Accord Party candidate would contest against Otti in 2027.

He also revealed that the party’s state structure had been directed to collaborate with the Labour Party in support of the governor.

“Let the good work continue,” Djungo stated.

For Governor Otti, the endorsement represents more than political support—it signals growing acceptance beyond his immediate party base.

Responding to the announcement, Otti thanked the Accord Party leadership and stressed that his administration remains focused on the welfare and security of Abia residents.

“The whole essence of politics is about the welfare of our people and security of our people,” he said.

The development is also significant because it hints at early coalition-building ahead of the 2027 elections. While campaigns may still seem distant, political positioning has clearly begun.

And in Nigerian politics, endorsements like this often carry symbolic weight.

They suggest confidence.
They shape perception.
And sometimes, they influence momentum before campaigns officially begin.

Still, the move may also spark debate.

Should opposition parties step aside when they believe a government is performing well? Or does democracy work best when voters are always presented with multiple alternatives?

For now, the Accord Party has made its stance clear.

And as the political atmosphere slowly builds toward 2027, one thing is becoming increasingly obvious, alliances, endorsements, and strategic partnerships may play just as important a role as party loyalty itself.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
