The Abia State Government is set to begin measures aimed at tackling malaria by eliminating mosquito breeding sites in areas identified as having high levels of mosquito larvae.

The state Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme, will commence larval source management activities before the end of September, beginning with Isuikwuato and Aba South Local Government Areas.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Umuahia.

He said available data showed that the two local government areas had significant mosquito breeding activities, prompting the government to target the larvae at their source.

Kanu also announced that the state would begin distributing insecticide-treated mosquito nets across its 17 local government areas in the first or second week of October. He said the nets had already started arriving in the state.

The government said the measures were part of efforts to strengthen malaria prevention and control across the state.

The larval source management programme is also part of a broader national strategy to diversify malaria prevention by addressing mosquito breeding sites through targeted environmental interventions.
