ABIA SLASHES OKADA FINE TO N20,000, SHIFTS ENFORCEMENT DATE
The Abia State Government has reduced the fine imposed on commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada riders, to N20,000 and postponed the commencement of enforcement of the policy.
The decision follows consultations with stakeholders and concerns raised by transport operators regarding the impact of the initial penalty regime.
Officials said the review is intended to encourage compliance while ensuring that enforcement measures remain fair and practical for affected operators.
According to the government, the extension of the enforcement date will provide riders with additional time to understand and comply with the new regulations.
Authorities emphasized that the policy is aimed at improving road safety, promoting orderliness, and enhancing traffic management across the state.
Transport unions and motorcycle operators have welcomed the adjustment, describing it as a positive step toward balancing regulation with the economic realities faced by riders.
The government reiterated that all operators are expected to comply with licensing, registration, and other requirements outlined in the policy.
Security and traffic management agencies have been directed to continue public sensitisation efforts ahead of the new enforcement date.
Analysts say the move reflects a willingness by the state government to engage stakeholders while pursuing transportation reforms.
The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that transportation regulations are implemented effectively.
