ABIA SET TO LAUNCH ITS FIRST-EVER ELECTRIC BUS SERVICE BEFORE YEAR-END
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, is preparing to launch an electric vehicle public transport initiative known as the Abia Green Shuttle Service, aimed at modernizing the state’s transportation system and promoting environmental sustainability.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the project is described as a groundbreaking step designed to transform public transportation and position Abia as a leader in sustainable mobility in Nigeria.
“The Abia Green Shuttle Service is part of Governor Otti’s visionary plan for a modern and eco-friendly transportation network, consistent with global standards and environmental sustainability goals,” the statement noted.
Ukoha emphasized that the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions.
“The State, under Governor Otti, has chosen to embrace the future beyond PMS, diesel, and CNG,” he said.
According to him, the government plans to acquire 100 electric buses that will operate within Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, with modern bus terminals currently under construction.
“The first batch of 20 electric buses, along with 10 charging stations equipped with accessibility features for persons with disabilities, will begin operation before the end of the year.
A second batch of 20 buses, supported by an additional 10 charging stations, is expected to arrive early next year,” Njoku added.
The statement further revealed that new bus stops in Aba and Umuahia are nearing completion to improve commuter convenience and service efficiency, while route mapping is underway.
It also highlighted that the transport system will run on renewable energy sources.
“The state’s sustainable transport project will minimize dependence on grid electricity by utilizing solar power and battery storage,” Ukoha explained.
He added that the initiative will enhance road safety, create employment opportunities, and stimulate the state’s economy.
“It will reduce road accidents through organized bus stops, provide jobs, and contribute to Abia’s economic growth,” he stated.
Describing the project as a major milestone in the state’s development agenda, Ukoha said, “Governor Otti’s vision for a sustainable transport system is both comprehensive and forward-thinking. The Green Shuttle initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to modernizing transportation, advancing sustainability, and improving the quality of life for Abia residents.”
