ABIA REDUCES OKADA FINE TO ₦20,000, POSTPONES ENFORCEMENT DATE

The Abia State Government has reduced the penalty for violating its motorcycle, popularly known as okada, restriction from ₦50,000 to ₦20,000 and announced a new date for enforcement.

State officials said the decision followed consultations with stakeholders and concerns raised by residents over the initial fine and implementation timeline.

According to the government, the adjustment is intended to give affected operators and communities more time to understand and comply with the directive.

Authorities noted that the postponement of the enforcement date will allow for additional public sensitisation and engagement with transport unions and community leaders.

The government reiterated that the restriction remains in place for designated areas and is aimed at improving security, reducing traffic-related challenges, and enhancing public safety.

Officials urged commercial motorcycle operators to comply with the regulations and make necessary adjustments before enforcement begins.

Residents were also encouraged to cooperate with authorities and take advantage of the transition period to familiarise themselves with the new guidelines.

The state government maintained that the policy is part of broader efforts to improve order and security while ensuring that implementation remains fair and practical for those affected.
