The Abia State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has vowed to crack down on quack journalists and impostors parading as professionals in the state.

This was part of a series of resolutions made during the union’s monthly congress. In a communiqué jointly signed by NUJ Chairman Chidi Asonye and Secretary Ikechukwu Onuegbu, the union warned that anyone found practicing journalism without proper licensing or recognition under the Nigeria Press Council law will face legal consequences.

The NUJ also raised concerns about public safety and infrastructure. The congress appealed to the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) and residents to clear blocked drainages across the state to prevent flooding during the rainy season.

To reduce road accidents, journalists called on the government to install speed breakers and a roundabout at the Sign Board Junction along the newly reconstructed Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road. They also advised tricycle operators to drive responsibly and avoid reckless behavior.

The union urged Governor Alex Otti to finalize the long-overdue promotion exercise for Abia civil servants, some of whom have reportedly gone over six years without advancement.

Further concerns were raised about the conduct of some internal revenue agents, who allegedly collect cash payments without issuing receipts — a violation of state guidelines. The NUJ stressed the need for strict monitoring of these officials to curb corruption.

On a positive note, the union commended the state government for launching solar power and water rehabilitation projects, which they say will improve public health. They, however, called for the protection of these new facilities from vandalism.

The NUJ also praised the completion of the Umuochiala Road leading to the Abia State Medical City in Isiala Ngwa South, describing it as a vital development milestone.

Lastly, the union urged Governor Otti to investigate allegations within the Ministry of Finance and other MDAs involving underpayments, salary deductions, and the failure to implement the new minimum wage in some government offices.

The NUJ says it will continue to speak up on issues that affect public welfare, professionalism, and government accountability in Abia State.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
