ABIA GOVT RESTORES POWER TO 33 COMMUNITIES AFTER 9-YEARS BLACKOUT
Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Monday inaugurated the restoration of electricity to 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area, ending a nine-year power blackout.
The project was implemented by the Abia State Government through the Abia State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ASOPADEC).
Speaking at the power switch-on ceremony in Obehie, Governor Otti said the initiative reflects his commitment to improving the living conditions of the oil-rich communities, which had experienced prolonged neglect in the past.
He urged residents of Ukwa West to safeguard the electric facilities and prevent vandalism or theft. “We all have a responsibility to protect what belongs to our community. Nobody can do it better than you, and those who steal are part of the community, not outsiders,” Governor Otti stated.
Responding to requests for subsidies on electricity bills following the restoration, the governor directed that selected stakeholders meet to explore possible solutions.
Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Ikechukwu Monday, explained that the power project involved the rehabilitation of 30 transformer distribution substations, installation of 12 new transformers, restoration of 34 kilometers of high-tension lines, and 3.5 kilometers of low-tension lines.
He added that the benefiting communities are now being metered for effective billing and highlighted the critical role of electricity in advancing Abia State’s development agenda.
