Electricity has finally returned to 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, bringing an end to nearly a decade of darkness and neglect. The power restoration was carried out under the directive of Governor Alex Otti, fulfilling a promise he made to the oil-producing communities earlier this year.

The power restoration project was implemented by the Abia State Government through the Abia State Oil Producing Area Development Commission, in collaboration with the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities. The governor officially switched on the electricity at a ceremony held at Central Primary School in Obehie on Monday.

Governor Otti arrived at the event alongside members of his cabinet in the newly launched Abia Green Shuttle electric vehicle bus, symbolising the administration’s commitment to clean energy and sustainable development. He reminded residents that the restoration of power came with a responsibility to protect public infrastructure and prevent vandalism.

According to the governor, the destruction of public utilities often comes from within communities themselves, stressing that residents must take ownership of the facilities provided for their benefit. He also acknowledged concerns about the affordability of electricity bills following the restoration. He directed relevant stakeholders to meet and explore ways to support vulnerable residents who may struggle with payments.

The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday explained that the project involved the rehabilitation of 30 transformer substations, the installation of 12 new transformers, and the restoration of over 37 kilometres of transmission and distribution lines. He added that metering was already underway to ensure fair and effective billing for residents.

Chairman of Aba Power Limited, Prof. Bartholomew Nnaji, assured the communities of a steady electricity supply, noting that the area falls within the coverage of Aba Power’s independent power system, which operates outside the national grid. He appealed to residents to avoid energy theft and vandalism to ensure uninterrupted service.

Local leaders welcomed the development with gratitude. The lawmaker representing Ukwa West State Constituency, Hon. Godwin Adiele, praised the governor’s performance and expressed confidence that the people of the area would support his administration in future elections. The General Manager of ASOPADEC, Rev. Joshua Onyeike, described the restoration of power as a turning point that would unlock economic growth and improve the quality of life across the communities.

For residents who endured nine years without electricity, the return of power marks not just the lighting of homes and streets, but a renewed sense of inclusion and hope for development in Ukwa West.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
