The Abia State Government has commenced strict enforcement of restrictions on commercial motorcycle operations in major urban areas as part of efforts to reduce road crashes and improve traffic management.

The ban, which affects certain routes and operating hours, was announced alongside the launch of a toll-free complaints and feedback line for residents. Governor Alex Otti stated that the measures are aimed at saving lives and promoting orderly movement in the state.

“Safety is paramount. We urge riders and the public to comply with the new regulations. The toll-free line is available for genuine concerns and reports,” the governor said. Security agencies have been deployed to ensure smooth implementation.

Motorcycle operators have been urged to transition to other means of livelihood or adhere strictly to approved zones. The state government promised support schemes for affected riders.

The initiative has received mixed reactions, with some residents welcoming the safety focus while others called for more consultation and alternatives for commuters.
