ABAYOMI BACKS 12-MONTH MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME FOR LAGOS HOUSE OFFICERS

Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has thrown his support behind a proposed mentorship programme designed to strengthen the professional development and welfare of house officers working across the state. Abayomi gave his backing after receiving house officers from General Hospital Lagos, Massey Street Children’s Hospital and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital during a courtesy visit to his office.

The commissioner described house officers as a crucial part of Lagos’ healthcare system, noting that their contribution to clinical care and community service makes their welfare and professional growth important to the overall performance of the state’s health sector. He said the engagement also provided an opportunity to discuss initiatives aimed at improving their working and living conditions.

A major focus of the discussion was the proposed House Officers’ Mentorship Experience (HOME), a 12-month pilot programme that would pair young doctors with experienced consultants. According to Abayomi, the initiative would provide house officers with practical guidance as they navigate the early stages of their medical careers, while helping them develop their clinical skills, leadership abilities and personal capacity.

Abayomi also commended the house officers for their commitment to healthcare delivery and their involvement in community outreach activities during House Officers Week 2026. He said investing in the development of young doctors would ultimately strengthen the quality of healthcare available to residents across Lagos State.

The commissioner further expressed appreciation to the group for the customised souvenir presented during the visit and assured them of the state government’s continued support. He maintained that initiatives that improve mentorship, welfare and professional development would help build a stronger workforce capable of meeting the healthcare needs of Lagos’ growing population.
