“ABARIBE REACTS TO NNAMDI KANU’S LIFE SENTENCE: ‘WE SAW THIS COMING’”
Former Senate Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe has reacted to the life sentence handed to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, saying the judgment did not come as a surprise to many Nigerians.
Speaking through his media adviser, Uchenna Awom, the senator expressed disappointment over the ruling but noted that the outcome had long been predicted. According to him, several stakeholders had sensed the direction the case was heading based on the events and concerns raised throughout Kanu’s trial.
Abaribe recalled that many leaders had previously appealed to the Federal Government to consider granting Kanu amnesty—similar to approaches taken with other armed groups in different parts of the country. He said the government’s refusal to explore this option made Thursday’s verdict expected.
He pointed out the contrast in how the country has handled various security challenges, from engagements with insurgents in the North-East and North-West to the amnesty programmes in the South-South. These inconsistencies, he noted, have fueled ongoing questions about fairness and equal treatment under the law.
While acknowledging that the judgment has left many people disappointed, Abaribe urged Nigerians to stay calm and maintain hope in a justice system that is fair and trustworthy.
He added that the next steps lie with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing optimism that the President would prioritize national unity, healing, and inclusion in any decisions that follow.
“We must remain calm and pray,” Abaribe said. “May Nigeria succeed, thrive, and advance in justice, equity, and fairness.”
