82-YEAR-OLD US SENATOR INDICTED FOR RUNNING MARIJUANA RING
Virginia state senator Louise Lucas, 82, has been indicted over allegations that she helped run an illegal marijuana business and launder its proceeds.
Lucas, a senior Democratic lawmaker, was charged alongside six other people, including relatives. She surrendered to federal authorities on Thursday after the indictment was unsealed.
Prosecutors allege that businesses connected to Lucas purchased and distributed unlawful quantities of marijuana. They also accuse her of using her political influence to benefit the operation.
Lucas serves as president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate. She is a state legislator, rather than a member of the United States Senate.
The case follows searches of her office and a cannabis business she co-owns earlier this year.
Lucas has vowed to fight back, describing the federal action as an attempt to intimidate her. Her representatives have also challenged the authorities’ handling of the matter.
The accusations remain allegations, and the indictment does not establish guilt. Prosecutors must prove their case in court.
