In a major political shift, about 792 women from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa State.

The women were officially received in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area by the wife of the governor, Mrs. Amina Umar Namadi. She described the defection as a sign of confidence in Governor Umar Namadi’s leadership and his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of women and youth.

“The APC’s doors remain open to everyone who wishes to join hands in moving Jigawa forward,” Mrs. Namadi assured the new members.

Also addressing the gathering, the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, highlighted the administration’s achievements since taking office. He noted that several programmes and policies have been introduced to uplift the lives of ordinary citizens, stressing that Jigawa has excelled in delivering the dividends of democracy compared to other states.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Amina Waina explained that the women decided to switch allegiance because of the government’s genuine support for women.

She pledged that the new APC members would continue mobilising women across the state to support Governor Namadi’s administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With this wave of defections, political watchers say the APC in Jigawa continues to consolidate its grassroots strength, particularly among women and youth groups.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
