The Rivers State Police Command has arrested seven suspects linked to the brutal killing of Bright Owhor, a Port Harcourt-based lawyer who was shot dead at his home on July 6, 2025, in the Rumuomasi area of the city.

The spokesperson for the Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrests during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday. She said the arrests were the result of a ten-day intelligence-led operation carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

“Through meticulous surveillance and intelligence gathering, officers were able to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the crime,” she stated.

The suspects, aged between 22 and 34, reportedly took on different roles in the murder plot — including the gunman, gang leader, arms supplier, getaway driver, and handler of stolen property.

During interrogation, the suspects confessed to being members of the Deygbam cult group and admitted to carrying out the killing. They also revealed their involvement in recent cult clashes in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt and confessed to withdrawing money from the late lawyer’s bank account after his murder.

Recovered items from the suspects include:

Four locally made pistols

Seven rounds of 9mm ammunition

Two live cartridges

A minibus

A Toyota Camry saloon car

An MTN SIM card

The police have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that justice will be served.

This shocking incident has sparked renewed concern about cult violence and insecurity in Port Harcourt, with many calling for urgent action to tackle gang activities in the state.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
