53-YEAR-OLD MAN DIES BY SUICIDE IN JAIL A DAY AFTER CONVICTION FOR WIFE’S MURDER
A tragic twist has followed the conviction of Shawn Lichtfuss, a 53-year-old New Jersey man who was found guilty of murdering his wife. Just one day after a jury delivered its verdict, Lichtfuss took his own life inside his jail cell.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that correctional officers discovered Lichtfuss unresponsive at 11:18 p.m. on September 19 during routine rounds at the Camden County Correctional Facility. Despite emergency efforts by medical staff, he was pronounced dead at 11:39 p.m.
An autopsy carried out by the Gloucester-Camden-Salem County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Lichtfuss died from asphyxia, ruling the case a suicide. The state Attorney General’s Office is currently reviewing the incident.
Lichtfuss’s death came less than 24 hours after a six-day trial ended with the jury finding him guilty of first-degree murder for the 2021 strangulation death of his wife, Stefanie Caraway, 38. Jurors reportedly deliberated for just 45 minutes before reaching their decision.
Caraway was found dead in the couple’s bedroom on August 3, 2021, during a welfare check. Authorities later arrested Lichtfuss after locating him in his car parked near a police station.
The shocking development has added a grim chapter to an already devastating case, leaving many in the Voorhees Township community stunned.
