Plans for the much-anticipated Abuja–Lagos Superhighway are gaining momentum, with AEC Unity Network Limited confirming that work on the project will soon commence.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, the company’s Chairman, Dr. Kenny Martins, described the $4 billion, 470-kilometre highway as a game-changing development that will drastically reduce travel time between Nigeria’s busiest cities.

According to him, the new road will allow vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour, providing a safer and faster alternative to existing routes.

“This is more than just a road. The Abuja–Lagos Superhighway will transform how people and goods move between the Federal Capital Territory and Lagos. It will open up rural communities, create jobs, and unlock new economic opportunities across the states it passes through,” Martins said.

The superhighway will cut across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the FCT, with extra links to Ondo State and Baro Port in Niger State — a move expected to boost trade and logistics across the region.

Once completed, the project is expected to alleviate congestion on current roads, lower transportation costs, and make travel less stressful for commuters and businesses.

Dr. Martins emphasized that the initiative is being carried out in partnership with the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), and the Federal Ministry of Works, under the supervision of Minister Dave Umahi.

“This road is not just for today but for future generations. By the grace of God, very soon Nigerians will be driving on this superhighway,” he assured.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
