A heartbreaking incident has shaken the Durumi community in Abuja after a 3-year-old boy tragically died by falling into an uncovered soakaway in a residential compound.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the arrest of Philip Jallo, a resident of Durumi 2, in connection with the child's death. Jallo is being held for negligence after reportedly ignoring repeated warnings from neighbours to cover the open septic tank in his compound.

According to police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, the fatal incident occurred around 9:00 pm on July 16, 2025, when the young boy, while playing, slipped and fell into the open pit filled with faeces. He was pulled out and rushed to the hospital but was sadly confirmed dead.

Investigations revealed that the open soakaway had been a known danger in the community, and concerned residents had frequently pleaded with Jallo to take action—warnings he allegedly ignored.

The Commissioner of Police in the FCT expressed deep sorrow over the child’s death and offered condolences to the grieving family. He also used the moment to urge residents to prioritize environmental safety, stressing that parents must keep a close eye on their children to prevent such avoidable tragedies.

The suspect remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
