27-YEAR-OLD LABOURER BEATEN TO DEATH BY HOODLUMS IN DELTA COMMUNITY
Tragedy struck in Orogun community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, as a 27-year-old labourer, Mr. Joseph Anighoro Ikana, was allegedly beaten to death by hoodlums.
According to reports, Ikana was accused of selling an electric socket meant for installation at the Federal Polytechnic, Orogun. However, no stolen items were found in his possession. Instead of allowing the police to investigate, the hoodlums took the law into their own hands, torturing him through the night on Thursday. He reportedly coughed up blood and died the following day, Friday.
His body has since been deposited at the General Hospital morgue, Ughelli, by the police.
Reacting to the incident, Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo, Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Human Rights, strongly condemned the act. He insisted that those responsible must face the full weight of the law and called on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Orogun to fish out the culprits.
He also urged political leaders in the area — Ughelli Council Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, and Delta State lawmaker, Omonade Matthew — to ensure the case is not swept under the carpet.
Ejumudo further appealed to the youths of Orogun to remain calm and avoid taking revenge, stressing that justice can only be achieved through lawful investigation and prosecution.
This unfortunate incident has once again raised concerns about the dangers of jungle justice in Nigeria and the urgent need for communities to trust the justice system instead of resorting to mob action.
