A 25-year-old man has been confirmed dead after allegedly killing his 48-year-old mother with a shovel in Mahikeng, South Africa.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, October 5, 2025, at their family home, and police have since launched an investigation into the matter.

According to witnesses, the young man attacked his mother with a garden shovel in what was described as a brutal assault that continued even after the woman had died.

A neighbor, who heard the commotion and rushed to the scene, reportedly found the man still attacking his mother’s body. In an attempt to stop him, the neighbor shot the suspect, killing him instantly.

Police officers arrived shortly after and discovered both bodies at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that a murder investigation has been opened into the woman’s death, while the neighbor who fired the fatal shot has been taken in for questioning as investigations continue.
