A 25-year-old university graduate, Faruk Mumuni, has been sentenced to two years in prison for trafficking Cannabis Sativa in Lagos.

Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the judgment on Friday after Mumuni was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Mumuni was arrested on August 13, 2025, alongside his mother, in the Mushin area of Lagos with 149 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa. He was subsequently charged with two counts under Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

During the court proceedings, the NDLEA’s counsel, Buhari Abdulahi, presented the charges and tendered evidence. Mumuni pleaded guilty to both counts, which led to his conviction.

His lawyer, E.U. Okenyi, pleaded for mercy, stressing that Mumuni was a first-time offender who admitted guilt early and showed genuine remorse.

In his ruling, Justice Dipeolu sentenced Mumuni to two years’ imprisonment, effective from the date of his arrest. However, the court gave him an alternative of paying a ₦5 million fine in place of serving the jail term.

The case highlights the growing concern of drug trafficking in the country and the NDLEA’s continued crackdown on offenders.
