Former Super Eagles forward Brown Ideye has voiced concern over goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s costly mistakes during Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Lesotho in Friday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier in South Africa.

Despite the win, Ideye said he was alarmed by two late errors from the Chippa United shot-stopper, which almost cost Nigeria crucial points.

Captain William Troost-Ekong opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the second half before substitute Akor Adams doubled the lead. However, a blunder from Nwabali allowed Lesotho to pull one back, setting up a tense finish.

Speaking on SuperSport, Ideye said the lack of communication between Nwabali and his defenders was worrying.

“That was bad communication from Nwabali — and it happened again. Imagine that ball went in,” Ideye said.

“The ball was going in slowly and I was screaming no. Thank God they didn’t equalise.”

The narrow win keeps Nigeria third in Group C, behind South Africa and Rwanda. The Super Eagles must now beat Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday and hope South Africa drop points to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
