The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that FIFA has opened an investigation into the suspension controversy surrounding midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

Lydia Monyepao, SAFA’s Chief Executive Officer, revealed that world football’s governing body contacted the association over how Mokoena was allowed to play against Lesotho in March during a 2026 World Cup qualifier, despite being ineligible after receiving two yellow cards.

If FIFA rules against South Africa, their 2-0 win over Lesotho could be overturned into a 3-0 defeat, a decision that may significantly reshape Group C standings.

“We have received communication from FIFA about the investigation… we are preparing our response to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee as required,” Monyepao told Idiski Times.

Currently, South Africa leads Group C with 17 points, followed by Benin Republic with 14 points, and Nigeria in third with 11 points. With just two matches left to play, both Benin and Nigeria will be closely watching FIFA’s verdict, as the ruling could revive their qualification hopes.

For now, the group remains on edge, awaiting FIFA’s final decision.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
