2026 WCQ: DROP TROOST-EKONG IF YOU WANT NIGERIA TO QUALIFY – SUNDAY OLISEH WARNS CHELLE
Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has advised national team coach Eric Chelle to drop defender William Troost-Ekong from the starting lineup ahead of Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying playoffs.
Oliseh made the statement on his YouTube channel, where he questioned Troost-Ekong’s recent performances and fitness level, suggesting that the veteran defender is nearing the twilight of his career.
“If we want to have a bright chance of going to the World Cup, Troost-Ekong has to be put on the bench. It’s as simple as that,” Oliseh said.
The former Ajax and Juventus midfielder emphasized that team selection should be based on current form and not sentiment, adding that Nigeria’s defense performed better in matches where Troost-Ekong did not feature.
“If you look at the last three or four games we played, the two matches Troost didn’t feature in, we didn’t concede a goal,” he noted.
“You don’t go into a game as a manager with emotions. You play those who are in top form. I’m saying it clearly — drop the captain and let him take a break. I’m not saying don’t take him to the World Cup, but for these games, he needs to rest.”
Troost-Ekong, who currently plays for Al-Kholood in Saudi Arabia, captained Nigeria to the AFCON 2024 final but has struggled with form and fitness since returning from injury.
Oliseh’s comments have sparked debates among fans, with many agreeing that the Super Eagles need fresh legs in defense ahead of their crucial playoff fixtures.
