2026 WCQ: AKPEYI HAILS TROOST-EKONG’S LEADERSHIP AFTER NIGERIA’S WIN OVER LESOTHO
Former Super Eagles and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has praised team captain William Troost-Ekong for showing leadership and composure in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Lesotho on Friday.
Akpeyi, speaking on SuperSport, applauded Troost-Ekong for stepping up to take the crucial penalty that gave the Super Eagles the lead during the 2026 World Cup qualifier in South Africa.
The veteran goalkeeper noted that such courage can only come from senior players who understand the pressure and responsibility of leading the team.
“This game is more mental. At this point, if you begin to panic, you might lose it easily. They’ve proven it here — they came with strong mentality,” Akpeyi said.
“For Troost-Ekong to step up after being heavily criticised in recent games shows real character. Only senior players can do that.”
Troost-Ekong has faced tough criticism in recent months after being blamed for Zimbabwe’s late equaliser in Uyo and scoring an own goal against South Africa. However, his confident performance against Lesotho appears to have silenced many of his critics.
The Super Eagles will next face the Cheetahs of the Benin Republic on Tuesday as they continue their push to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the USA, and Mexico.
