15 CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS SACKED, 59 DEMOTED FOR MISCONDUCT – NCOS BOARD CRACKS DOWN ON INDISCIPLINE
Nigerian Correctional Service Dismisses 15 Officers, Demotes 59 Over Misconduct
In a bold move to enforce discipline and uphold professional standards, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board has dismissed 15 officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) over serious misconduct and breach of service regulations.
According to a statement issued by the NCoS spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, the disciplinary actions followed the review of 224 cases of misconduct involving officers across the Service.
The statement revealed that:
15 officers were dismissed for serious violations of conduct.
59 officers were demoted due to confirmed breaches of professional standards.
42 officers received warning letters as a corrective measure.
8 officers were compulsorily retired.
1 officer’s rank was reversed and ordered to refund all earnings received while in the wrongly-held position.
7 officers are under suspension pending investigation.
1 officer was recommended for prosecution and handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
On a positive note, 16 personnel were cleared of all allegations and exonerated after a thorough investigation.
The disciplinary decisions were based on the recommendations of the Board’s Disciplinary and General Purpose Committee, which carried out what it described as extensive investigations with full adherence to due process.
The board, chaired by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunde-Ojo, emphasized its dedication to maintaining ethical and professional standards in the Correctional Service.
Meanwhile, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, reassured the public that disciplinary cases will continue to be handled fairly, and following the rules. He urged citizens to support the Service in its efforts to reform and strengthen accountability.
“We remain committed to rooting out misconduct and ensuring our officers operate with integrity,” the Controller General said.
The crackdown reflects a growing effort by the federal government to restore credibility, transparency, and discipline in Nigeria’s paramilitary and security services.
