13-YEAR-OLD SCHOOLBOY KILLS TEACHER, INJURES TWO IN SLOVAKIA ATTACK

A 13-year-old schoolboy has been detained after a knife attack at a school in northwestern Slovakia left a teacher dead and two other people injured.

The attack occurred around 7:00am GMT on Tuesday in the village of Staskov, near the Czech border, according to authorities.

Slovak police said the boy was being investigated for premeditated murder after allegedly attacking people with a knife following the first class of the day.

Emergency officials said a 61-year-old woman died from her injuries, while a 44-year-old woman who suffered a stab wound to the chest and a female pupil were taken to hospital.

The schoolgirl was reported to be in serious, critical condition, although the Health Minister, Kamil Sasko, later said the injured teacher was not in a life-threatening condition.

Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said the situation in the village had been brought under control. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack, while the Education Minister, Tomas Drucker, declined to comment on whether bullying was involved.
 

Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said he was following the incident with concern.

President Peter Pellegrini also expressed shock, saying the incident was another case involving an attack by a student on teachers and a fellow pupil. He called for efforts to reduce aggression and intolerance in society.

The latest incident follows previous school attacks in Slovakia. In January 2025, an 18-year-old student killed a teacher and another pupil and injured a second pupil at a secondary school in Spisska Stara Ves.

In 2020, a teacher was stabbed to death and several others were injured in an attack at an elementary school in central Slovakia.
