11 STUDENTS ARRESTED OVER DEATH OF TWO SCHOOLBOYS IN KANO
The Kano State Police Command has arrested 11 students in connection with the tragic deaths of two boarding school students in Bichi Local Government Area.
The victims, Hamza Idris Tofawa and Umar Yusuf Dungurawa, both students of Government Boarding Secondary School, Bichi, were reportedly attacked and killed by fellow students using locally made metal objects known as “Gwale-Gwale.”
Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the arrests on Thursday, adding that the suspects are already being interrogated to uncover the full truth. He assured the public that the police would get to the bottom of the matter and that anyone found guilty would face prosecution.
The Kano State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, has also launched an investigation into the incident. Represented by top officials during a visit to the school, the Commissioner promised a fair and transparent investigation and stressed that justice will be served.
Early reports suggest that the attack may have been carried out by senior students who wanted to "punish" the victims for an alleged offence. Officials have condemned this act of jungle justice, urging students to report issues to school authorities rather than taking laws into their own hands.
“Students must never take the law into their hands. Any issue must be reported for proper action,” said Bashir Baffa Muhammad, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education.
He also offered the state government’s condolences to the grieving families and prayed for the departed souls.
“On behalf of the Kano State Government and the people of Kano, we extend our heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased. May Allah grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” he added.
Abbas Abdullahi, Director at the Kano State Senior Secondary School Management Board, expressed shock at the incident and warned that such abuse of authority among students must stop.
The state government has vowed to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth and ensuring that such a tragedy never happens again in any school across Kano.
